Q. How often should you change strings?
A. The appropriate time to change strings varies. The type of string, the amount of time that you practice, and the weather are some of the factors that go into determining when it time to change your string. Strings in need of changing don't stay in tune throughout the neck. They might be in-tune in the first position but sound out-of-tune higher up the neck. If this happens, a string change is overdue. If you practice frequently and have sweaty hands you might need to change your strings every week. If your hand doesn't sweat much you probably can get by with once a month. By wiping down the strings with a clothe or napkin after playing you can extend the life of the strings.

Q. What about electronic tuners?
I think they are great. I have a couple, I use them at every gig. I have one of the small battery powered types and one that is built into an effects unit. I still I prefer to tune by ear when at home, using the methods described here.

Q. What about open tunings?
These pages on tuning do not address open tuning at all. Many open tunings adjust the tuning of the strings so that the open strings create a simple major or minor triad. Sorry, no more information is here at this time.
